Research Data Filer Convert
Release 1.0
15 October 1991
Research Data Filer Convert will convert a GEDCOM file to a
RDF database, and convert a RDF database to a GEDCOM file. Research
Data Filer Convert makes it easier for researchers to use the powerful
focus and sort routines that are part of the RDF program.
There are important differences between the RDF and Family Records
program. A researcher would need to use the focus and sort routines in
both programs to appreciate the difference. The RDF program makes it
easy to browse through records, find family relationships and then
GEDCOM only the records wanted into the Family Records database.
Perhaps the best way to use Research Data Filer Convert is for the
the conversion of GEDCOM files down-loaded from the International
Genealogical Index (IGI). All records with a certain surname can be
down-loaded onto a disk to be run through this program. RDF can then
be used to browse through those records to find individuals related to
you.
Research Data Filer Convert will also allow the use of the RDF to
sort through GEDCOM files created from the Social Security Index, the
Viet Nam and Korean War Index, the Ancestral File and any records that
become available in the future. This may include the 1880 U.S. Census,
and the 1881 British Census.
Research Data Filer Convert will sort through GEDCOM files and find
the parents of individuals. It will take each individual and family
found in the GEDCOM file and add them to the RDF database. If Research
Data Filer Convert finds the parents for an individual, they will be
written in the relationship field for each event for that individual.
For example: If an individual in a GEDCOM file has fields for a birth,
christening, marriage, death, and burial then Research Data Filer Convert
will create five separate records for that individual corresponding to the
five events. If it only finds one event for an individual then only one
record will be written. The parents of the individual will be written in
each record except the marriage record. The spouse of the individual will
be written in the relationship field for any record with a marriage event.
Research Data Filer Convert will not create RDF records for any
individual that shows events other than the five listed above. It will
also not create document files for notes, or use document files when
creating GEDCOM files. It will however take any information contained
in the relationship field or the comments field when creating a GEDCOM
file, and add that to the notes for that individual.
Research Data Filer Convert writes the last name first in both the
name field and in the relationship field. It is important that names
appear in this format when converting to GEDCOM files or the full names
will appear as given names only.
Example-
Name:Smith, John Adam
Relationship:F-Smith, John Adam M-Jones, Mary Ann
Relationship:S-Jones, Mary Ann
Research Data Filer convert will transfer an RDF file to GEDCOM only
if it contains the following events: born, birth, blessed, blessing,
christening, marriage, died, dead, death, burial or buried. Research Data
Filer Convert ignores any other events.
Research Data Filer Convert examines each record in a RDF database
separately. If an individual has a record for both a birth and christening,
then two entrys will be written to the GEDCOM file. With this in mind it
may be neccessary to use the match/merge function in the Family Records
program to merge individuals that are duplicates or that have different
events.
It is also important to remember that if names are not in the format
specified above they will be considered given names when Research Data
Filer Convert creates the GEDCOM file.
The esc key will exit to the main menu at any time.
This program is shareware. It may be freely distributed, but may not
be sold or offered as an inducement to purchase another product. It is
distributed as two files, RDFC.EXE and RDFC.DOC.
If you find this program to be a useful addition to your genealogical
software library then send $10.00 to the author. This will encourage
further development of PAF and GEDCOM utilities. You will also be notified
of any major upgrades to Research Data Filer Convert, and other utility
software that may be written. The source code is available for $30.00.
